Cake!

Here is an excellent example of how baking can become an art project:
It all started with a craving for cake.  And, since I have all of the ingredients on hand to make one from scratch, I made one!  I used the one-bowl cake recipe from the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook (the one with the red and white plaid).  It was better than out of a box and almost as simple (oh darn, I had to measure the dry ingredients by hand)!  The I looked in the same book for an icing recipe and decided to make buttercream icing.  For those who don't know, buttercream icing is basically whipped butter and powdered sugar.  And it can be dyed fun colors as evidenced by the picture.  That was where it stared to get interesting.  I thought, can I pipe this?  Turns out I could.  It looks pretty good in the picture, but it's sunk in more now.  Oh well, it still tastes good.  I know it's not made of yarn, but the curls on the edges are kind of yarn inspired.

Houndstooth scarf

I started this scarf a little over a month ago.  It's about a foot wide and should be about six feet long when I finish.  I'm making it on my rigid heddle loom with chenille yarn in two shades of brown.  The pattern (houndstooth) is a traditional pattern and is actually less complicated than it looks.  The pattern naturally occurs when I change colors every two strings.  By now it's about two feet long, but that's mostly because I haven't been actively working on it.  It's much more trouble to pull out a loom that's over two feet wide than it is to pull out a crochet hook that's six inches long.
